Zhejiang Yuexiu University Of Foreign Languages

Zhejiang Yuexiu University of Foreign Languages (hereinafter referred to as “Yuexiu”) is a full-time institute offering regular undergraduate education established with the approval of National Ministry of Education of China. Located in the city of Shaoxing, one of the 24 historical and cultural cities first honored in China, known as the hometown of the famous Chinese writer Lu Xun, Yuexiu was founded in 1981 and upgraded into a four-year university in 2008.

It has two campuses, Jishan Campus and Jinghu Campus, covering an area of 1,000 mu (approximately 67 hectares) with a total floor area of about 420,000 m². The library has a collection of 1.6 million books in print and 1.02 million e-books.

Presently, the University has over 16,000 full-time undergraduate students, with a teaching staff of over 1,000, among whom 30% are full or associate professors and 80% have masters and/or doctoral degrees. It boasts one member enjoying the Government Special Allowance of the State Council, two leading young and middle-aged teachers of their respective discipline at the provincial level and one provincial distinguished teacher.

The University has nine colleges, namely, College of English, College of Oriental Languages, College of Euro-languages, College of International Business, College of Network Communication, College of Chinese Language and Culture, International School of Hospitality Management, and College of International Education. It offers 23 majors for undergraduates, including ten foreign languages of English, French, German, Russian, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Japanese, Korean and Arabic. It has accumulated rich resources of running school and created its brand name in terms of cultivating talents of mastering minority languages and formed its distinctive features in grooming practical foreign language talents. The initial employment rate of the graduates has ranked among the top ones for 10 consecutive years among universities and colleges in Zhejiang province.

Holding fast to developing Yuexiu into a practical, international, and high-level private foreign language university, the University has been guided under the principle of “management with standard, governance with distinction and quality, prosperity by talents, and strength by research” to further develop “Three Effective Integration” of “professional teaching + foreign language teaching”, “theoretical teaching + practical teaching”, “local education + overseas education”. Thus, it has formed a well-received talent cultivation system of SPT (System of Professional Talent). SPT demonstrates the cultivation system for practical foreign language talents with high quality and international vision and foreign-related specialized talents.

The University has received positive feedback from both the society and its students alike in cultivating high-caliber talents based on SPT. According to the assessment statistics of graduates’ quality released by the Education of Zhejiang Province in 2013, among 33 higher education institutions in the province, Yuexiu ranked the second place in terms of graduates’ quality to employers’ satisfaction and the 16th in “career development of graduates and talent cultivation quality”, one of the key comprehensive assessing indicators for talents quality.

The University has scored fruitful results in international exchange. Currently, it has established intercollegiate cooperative ties with 56 higher education institutions and organizations from 12 countries and regions of the U.S., UK, New Zealand, Italy, Russia, Spain, Germany, France, North Korea, Japan, Egypt and Taiwan, along with international collaborative programs covering 9 foreign languages and all the majors. In addition, we have a diverse background of faculty members and students, including one hundred foreign teachers from countries like the U.S., UK, Canada, Australia, Japan, France, Russia, etc, and over one hundred overseas students.

The University is home to the provincial key discipline of Foreign Languages and Literature, the municipal key disciplines of Foreign Linguistics and Applied Linguistics as well as French Language and Literature. North Korean language is granted as the provincial dominant specialty , English, the municipal featured specialty, and Japanese, the municipal key specialty.

As a university that cultivates practical language professionals, it attaches great importance to the facilities for teaching and practice. It boasts a provincial-level demonstration center for foreign languages and a municipal-level one for economics and business experimental teaching, facilitated with Lab for Simultaneous Interpreting, Language Lab, satellite televisions, Foreign Language FM Radio Station, Lab for International Business and Trade and other apparatus. Besides, with language salons for minority language learners, classrooms for experiencing foreign cultures, Japanese teahouse, and SPT culture streets, students can indulge themselves in exotic cultures and are provided with over one hundred teaching and internship bases to better both teaching and practice.

In the spirit of the school motto “Harmony, Integrity, Cultivation, Success”, the University has formed the first military training team among universities and colleges in Zhejiang province. There are about 200 students joining the team, responsible for training freshmen, thus adding an extraordinary scene to the campus life.

With the voluntary spirit of “Giving, Friendliness, Mutual Help, Progress” in mind, students take an active part in various volunteering services. By December, 2014, more than 26,000 students have engaged in such activities both at and out of the school. It has exerted positive effects on society.

Xia Baolong, Party Secretary of Zhejiang, visited Yuexiu on May, 13th, 2015, pointed out: “Yuexiu is a vigorous university with clear goals...” and extended his best wishes to Yuexiu’s making great strides in going forward. It speaks volumes about our achievements and his high expectation of Yuexiu in future. 

The year of 2015 is crucial to welcoming the undergraduate teaching evaluation from the Ministry of Education. To get fully prepared, the University continues to free our mind, deepen reforms, and optimize talent cultivation quality and features. It has been dedicated to educating students, pursuing academic excellence, producing talents, and shouldering responsibilities and defining talent cultivation, scientific research, social service, and cultural passing and innovation as our mission. We will double our efforts to provide satisfactory higher education to students in accordance with the need of society and employers and deliver qualified talents for foreign economic development.
